Cork City : European Capital of Culture 2005

Following a decision of the European Parliament, in 1999, the Council of Europe established a Community Action for the European Capital of Culture Event for the years 2005 - 2019.

Ireland was given the opportunity to nominate the City of Culture for 2005 the first year of the new Community Action. Four Irish cities, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford applied. Cork was designated as Cultural Capital of Europe for the year 2005 on the basis of the report of the selection panel.

The Cork 2005 programme will include the best in Architecture, Crafts, Dance, Design, Film, Food, Literature, Music, Sport, Theatre and Visual Arts, aiming to delight, engage, challenge and amaze visitors and residents alike. Artists, musicians and writers from far and wide will visit and reside in Cork. The streets and venues will be animated by the sights, sounds and smells of the world beyond our shores.

There will be a huge variety of events, concerts, displays and shows every day, right through the year. Have a look on the 'Cork 2005' website for a wealth of information, and a calender of events, which will be updated right through the year!
