Whether it's fishing, hunting or golf, it's all here in Co. Laois. To the north-west of the county are the waterfalls and valleys of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. Most of the county is low lying and comprises of a lot of bogland which is the main source of fuel for fireplace, cooking and electricity. The two main towns are Portlaoise and Portarlington, which although inland, were actual ports for the barges that went up and down the Canals linking Dublin and the rest of Ireland, before the railways were built.

Castle Durrow

Castle Durrow was built in 1712, and stands in the dominant position in the centre of Durrow Village overlooking the beautiful River Erkina. In the past four years since it was aquired by its new owners, Peter and Shelly Stokes, the Castle gas been transformed into a fabulous 24-bedroomed Country House Hotel. There truly isn't any other like it in Ireland.
